Husson collects crown NCAA tourney next for Eagles

FARMINGTON – Megan Clement’s goal 18 minutes into the match lifted the Husson College Eagles to a 1-0 women’s soccer victory over the UMaine-Farmington Beavers in the North Atlantic Conference championship Sunday.

Husson (13-7-1) won the conference title for the second straight year and will advance to the NCAA Div. III tournament as the NAC’s automatic qualifier. The tournament field is scheduled to be released today.

UMF, which entered the match undefeated in 12 NAC regular-season and playoff matches, finished its season with a 14-5-2 overall record.

Clement scored with a looping shot just beyond the reach of UMF goalie Kerry Kowalczyk.

That lead stood up in part due to the goaltending of Husson’s Tatyana Wolterbeek, who made a leaping block of a shot by UMF’s Chelsea Norton early in the second half, then robbed the Beavers’ Jackie Mrazik later in the period.

Wolterbeek finished with three saves, while Kowalczyk and Melissa Demerchant combined on one save.

Husson’s Caitlin Nickerson was named the tournament’s MVP, and was joined on the all-tournament squad by teammates Wolterbeek, Clement, Meredith Homer and Megan LaJoie. Norton and Heidi Jackson represented UMF on the all-tourney team.

The loss ended the soccer coaching career of UMF’s Bob Leib, who is retiring with an overall record of 411-157-50. That includes 151-63-16 with the women’s soccer team since 1996 after a 260-94-34 record over 25 years with UMF’s men’s soccer squad.
