Performance to benefit Houlton hospital project

Tickets are still available for you, your family and friends to enjoy the performance of Marko, Master Magician and Hypnotist, who will appear from 7 to 9:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at Houlton High School.

Tickets are $10 and are available in Houlton at York’s Bookstore, Aroostook Milling, Andy’s IGA, Shop ‘n Save, F.A. Peabody, Houlton Chamber of Commerce or the Health Services Foundation office at Houlton Regional Hospital.

Proceeds benefit the foundation’s $1 million campaign for the hospital’s nuclear medicine project.

Elizabeth Dulin of the Health Services Foundation reports this performance is one that will appeal to everyone. She particularly encourages high school students to get tickets because she believes they really would enjoy the show.

The two-part performance first will feature the magic of Marko, while the second part is all about hypnosis. Sponsors stress the hypnosis is respectful and no one will be made to appear foolish.

New Mexico native and current Maine resident David Haskins’ American landscape paintings are on display at the Eastern Maine Community College art gallery, and the public is invited to a reception to meet and hear the artist.

Haskins, who also is an art instructor, will discuss his work from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, in the EMCC library gallery on the Bangor campus.

The exhibit runs through Friday, Dec. 28, and is the second in the EMCC 2007-2008 Art Exhibit Series.

Lucille Gosselin, chairwoman of the Bangor-Brewer Christian Women’s Club, reports the group will be host to a couples luncheon noon-2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at Spectacular Event Center, 395 Griffin Road in Bangor.

Admission is $10 for the buffet luncheon, which features a presentation by New York residents Ronald and Dixie Westervelt, whose talk, “Rescued,” focuses on a collection of World War I artifacts. The couple also will provide musical entertainment.

Gosselin urges you to “bring friends and take full advantage of having your male companions accompany you for the only time they are invited during the year.”

Kristie Miner of Westgate Manor reminds us November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month.

If you are interested in learning more about this disease and Medicare benefits, you are welcome to attend a presentation by two representatives of Beacon Hospice, Medicare specialist Jean Nowak and licensed medical social worker Cindy Small.

The presentation, “Medicare Benefits You May Not Know About,” is 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at Westgate Manor, 750 Union St. in Bangor.

I was pleased to hear from Mike Hutchins that once again in recognition of Veterans Day, members of the Brewer High School Key Club and Student Council will be hosts to a Veterans’ Remembrance Assembly.

Hutchins reports all area veterans are invited to attend the assembly, which begins with a continental breakfast from 7:15 to 8 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at Brewer High School. The assembly follows breakfast.

Directed by Brady Harris, the Maine Army Guard Band will perform, “and several speakers have been asked to participate,” Hutchins wrote.

The assembly also will feature a theme presentation, and all area veterans “are encouraged to attend to be honored by the Brewer High School community.”

People who know of artists and crafters such as Rose Dudley, Maudine Cunningham, Mary McCormick, Joy Diachenko, Julie Burke, Marilyn Wing, Linda Kinney and Susan Dupler won’t want to miss the 10th annual Holiday Fair sponsored by the Community Wellness Program of Waldo County General Hospital.

Sandra Gordon of Waldo County Healthcare reports this event will be held 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, in the hospital’s Education Center, 118 Northport Ave., Belfast.

At the fair, you will find everything from ornaments to textiles, jewelry, stationery and photography.

Funds raised through the fair benefit the work of the hospital’s community wellness program.

Bette Jean Beers of First United Methodist Church in Brewer invites you to There’s Sno Place Like Home Church Fair from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the church, 40 South Main St.

Beers reports the fair features “12 booths with something for everyone,” and includes a baked bean luncheon.
