Familiar faces secure positions in Houlton

HOULTON – It was deja vu for the three people who won seats on the Houlton Town Council on Election Day.

Paul Romanelli, Sue Tortello and John Fitzpatrick, all of whom have served as councilors in the past, scored victories on Tuesday and attended the council’s organizational meeting Wednesday afternoon.

Romanelli and Fitzpatrick ran for the two open three-year terms, earning 983 votes and 940 votes, respectively. They beat out challengers Phil Bernaiche, who secured 448 votes, and Stanley Ginish, who garnered 139 votes.

Tortello bested Carl Lord Jr. for a one-year seat on the panel, securing 978 votes to Lord’s 363 votes.

In other election results, two seats were open on the SAD 29 school board, and two people were running for those seats. Incumbent Kim Thompson secured re-election, and Frances Grant also garnered a three-year term on the board.

Incumbents Albert Fitzpatrick and Scott Austin ran uncontested for the two open seats on the Houlton Water Co. board of directors.

Iva Sussman ran unopposed for a five-year seat on the Cary Library board of trustees.

Write-in candidates were sought to fill three open seats on the board of budget review, as no one ran for those slots. Town Clerk Cathy O’Leary said Wednesday that two write-in candidates – Don Keiser and Phil Bernaiche – have agreed to take the seats, while O’Leary is seeking confirmation from the third candidate.

During the council’s brief organizational meeting, which customarily follows the elections, Paul Cleary was re-elected as council chairman, while Nancy Ketch will serve as secretary.

Romanelli and Fitzpatrick were appointed to three-year terms on the board of directors of the Shiretown Development Corp., while Tortello was appointed to a one-year term.

The next council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 13.
