SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Nicole Hanewich tallied a goal and a pair of assists, all in the first half, as Springfield College knocked Husson College out of the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship with a 3-0 first-round victory Wednesday.

With the loss, the North Atlantic Conference Champion Eagles’ season comes to a close with a 13-8-1 record while Springfield improves to 16-2-1.

“With such a young team, we learned some good lessons today”, said Husson head coach Keith Bosley. “We gave too much space and allowed Springfield to get in front early in the first half.

“We cut down our mistakes in the second half and closed down their attack and transition in the midfield,” he added. “For what we thought was going to be a rebuilding year, I am certainly very proud of my team.”

Hanewich fed the ball to Sandra Kogul for a goal in the 12th minute and then set up Brittany Collins for a tally in the 38th minute of the first half. Hanewich then notched Springfield’s third goal with just under two minutes remaining in the half.

Tatyana Wolterbeek faced 26 shots and made nine saves for Husson of Bangor while Sue Jenney faced just three shots for Springfield and did not need to make a save to record the shutout.

MIT 1, Saint Joseph’s 0 (OT)

At Standish, Janine Hopmans scored the game-winning goals just 57 seconds into overtime to lift the Massachusetts Institute of Technology past Saint Joseph’s College in the ECAC Division III quarterfinal.

The Monks conclude their first season in the GNAC with a 12-1-2 conference record, and 16-2-3 overall.

Hopmans received a pass from Amy Ludlum and took a shot on the run from the right side finding the left corner of the net just past the Monks diving goalkeeper Katye Mayo.

Mayo stopped 12 of 22 shots for Saint Joseph’s while Stephanie Brenman made eight saves for 13-6 MIT.

Saint Joseph’s 2, Wheaton 1

At Norton, Mass., Alyssa Dunn scored twice during a penalty stroke shootout as fifth seeded Saint Joseph’s College downed fourth seeded Wheaton College in the first round of the ECAC Division III tournament.

The Monks improve to 13-6 and move on to host eighth seeded Plymouth State University on Saturday.

Saint Joseph’s scored first when Dunn received the ball off a penalty corner and slid a pass to Courtney Rague who found the net with two minutes left in the first half.

Wheaton tied the game when Jessica Strock scored a goal with 14:10 remaining in regulation.

After two overtimes, Darcey Ward and Dunn each converted penalty strokes to win the shootout for Saint Joseph’s.

Kathleen Simoes made five saves on nine shots for the Monks. Cameron Abel stopped five of seven shots for 13-7 Wheaton.

Plymouth State 2, USM 0

At Gorham, Kristina Conroy and Kerry D’Ambroise each scored a goal to lead eighth-seeded Plymouth State University to victory over top-seeded University of Southern Maine in the first round of the ECAC Division III New England Championship.

With the win, Plymouth State improves to 11-8 overall while the Huskies finish with a 15-8 record.

Conroy scored first when she tapped in a pass from Sarah Smith in the 32nd minute. Plymouth State increased its advantage when D’Ambroise scored a goal in the 50th minute.

Allison Hill made eight saves on 12 shots for the Huskies while Katie Randall made one save to record the shutout for Plymouth State.

Middlebury 5, UM-Farmington 1

At Middlebury, Vt., Reid Berrien and Lacey Farrell each notched two goals to propel Middlebury College by the University of Maine at Farmington in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

The NAC champion Beavers close their season at 13-6.

Heather McCormack, Farrell and Berrien each scored a goal in the first half for Middlebury. Berrien added her second goal of the game at 47:32 and then made a pass to Farrell at 50:28 for the fifth and final goal.

Erika Lucas got the Beavers on the board with a goal 1:46 into the second half on a pass from Andrea Tyler.

Kaeleigh Barker made 14 saves for UMF while Cailtlin Pentifallo stopped two shots for 14-4 Middlebury.
