Preventing cervical cancer

ORONO – A speaker from Maine’s Immunization Program will give information and answer questions about a vaccine that protects against cervical cancer and genital warts caused by the Human Papillomavirus. The talk is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, Church of Universal Fellowship vestry, 82 Main St.

The session is relevant for everyone interested in, or responsible for, the health of young women in middle and high school. Penobscot Valley American Association of University Women will sponsor the event with Orono Town nurse Leslie Peterson and the Orono Health Association.

“Thanks to early detection, cervical cancer is not the killer it once was,” Peterson said. “The real goal now is to turn most cervical cancer into a preventable disease.”

For information, call Phyllis Borns, 866-4193, or Barb Nichols, 866-5732.

Helping the caregiver

BANGOR – St. Joseph HomeCare has been presenting Families of Caring, a free series geared toward helping the primary caregiver responsible for taking care of adult parents or other family members. The care of loved ones can be daunting and exhausting. However, acquiring practical tools can assist in making the experience rewarding as well.

St. Joseph HomeCare’s program Family of Caring features practical information for the caregiver. The final program for this year will take place 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, in the Dr. Frank Chapman Conference Room at St. Joseph Hospital. Topics include winter safety and emergency preparedness.

The program is free and open to the public. Interested parties are asked to call 262-1810 to register, but it is not required.

Cookbook for hearing center

BANGOR – The Warren Center for Communication and Learning has published a spiral-bound cookbook featuring more than 100 recipes from staff, community members and even a few politicians.

“The cookbook is not only a beautiful book full of delicious recipes, but all of the proceeds from sales of the cookbook go directly back to the center,” program director MaryBeth Richards said. “Funds from the cookbook will assist the Warren Center in helping the residents of Greater Bangor hear and speak better.”

The cookbook costs $8. It includes a variety of colorful and tasty appetizers, entrees and desserts. To request a copy, call 941-2850 or e-mail masaxl@warrencenter.org and give your name and contact information.

It is available at Lippincott Booksellers, Lamb’s Bible and Bookstore, Shepherd’s Path, Bangor House of Pizza, St. Joseph Hospital Gift Shop, Rebecca’s Gift Shop, Miller Drug and Frank’s Bakery.
