Flags to line turnpike in honor of veterans

PORTLAND – The Maine Turnpike Authority has begun erecting 200 flags alongside the 109-mile toll road to honor U.S. veterans.

Turnpike spokesman Dan Paradee says enough flags were donated by the American Legion to allow for one 3-by-5-foot flag per mile along the southbound lanes from York to Augusta. Also, clusters of flags are being placed at each service plaza.

Executive Director Paul Violette says the turnpike authority is honored to be taking part in the effort, timed to coincide with Veterans Day.

The flags will remain on display until Nov. 15. The Maine Turnpike was designated the “Gold Star Memorial Highway” by an act of the Legislature in 1965 to honor Gold Star mothers, those who have lost a son or daughter in war.
