O’Malley helps Eagles slip past Black Bears

ORONO – Sara O’Malley scored one goal and assisted on another to lead Robert Morris University past the University of Maine women’s hockey team 3-2 Friday afternoon.

For 4-6-1 Robert Morris, Mallory Giambra scored the game-winning goal in the third period. Brianne McLaughlin made 31 saves on 33 shots. Alissa Dorman scored the other goal.

Taryn Peacock and Vanessa Vani each assisted on both goals for the 1-9-1 Black Bears. Amy Stech and Courtney Fox were Maine’s scorers. Genevieve Turgeon made 26 saves on 29 shots.

Saint Joseph’s 2, Wheaton 1, SO

At Henniker, N.H., sophomore Julia Ostrowski scored as the fourth shooter to lead No. 4 Saint Joseph’s College past No. 3 Wheaton College 3-2 in penalty strokes in the suspended ECAC Division III Quarterfinals.

Saint Joseph’s will host Plymouth State in the semifinals on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Monks were declared the winners on Wednesday at Norton, Mass., after a 3-2 victory in a sudden-victory shootout round, but ECAC officials had deemed the game incomplete. The game restarted at a neutral site at New England College. Saint Joseph’s also won the second set, 3-2.

Courtney Rague scored off of a Alyssa Dunn assist in the 33rd minute of the first half for the 13-6 Monks. Kathleen Simoes blocked five shots.

Jessica Strock scored on a Alisa Ardito assist at 55:50 in the second half to tie it at 1-1 for 13-7 Wheaton. Cameron Abel made five saves.

Volleyball

Albany 3, Maine 0

At Orono, Kate Eckhardt had 17 kills and eight digs to help lead Albany past the University of Maine 30-24, 30-27, 30-20.

Tawny Dahmes totaled 16 digs for 19-8 Albany. Valerie Sourbeer and Kamisha Kellam both had 10 kills.

Laura Goettsch had 11 kills and 12 digs to pace the 3-22 Black Bears. Lindsay Allman added 18 digs and eight kills and Ashlee Wright had 13 digs.
