Bears solid in NCAA regional

The University of Maine cross country teams had solid performances at Saturday’s NCAA Northeast Regional championship meet at Franklin Park in Boston.

The men finished 23rd out of 34 scoring teams with 656 points while the women finished 20th in the 36-team field with 641 points.

The Providence College women and Iona University men captured team championships.

The UMaine men were paced by sophomore Chris Harmon of Scarborough, who finished in 104th place and was timed in 32 minutes, 11 seconds over five miles.

Charles Therriault was the Black Bears’ No. 2 man in 122nd place, while Miles Bartlett of Casco took 130th.

Donny Drake of Portland (136th) and Brendan Carr of Brewer (164th) rounded out Maine’s five scoring runners. Corey Bean was 189th.

On the women’s side, Elonnai Hickok ran to a 66th-place finish in 22:15.85 over 6,000 meters. Chelsea Leeman of Brunswick was the Bears’ second runner in 111th place while Laura Brustolon was 126th.

Stephanie Jette finished 150th and Jolene Belanger of Glenburn 155th to round out the Bears’ top five. Erin Lawler finished 204th and Kristina Stephens 215th.
