Race for the Cure sets fundraising record

BANGOR – This year’s Komen Maine Race for the Cure surpassed last year’s high by raising more than $230,000.

The Komen Maine Affiliate partnered this year with Kintera, an online registration and fundraising vendor. Participants were able to create their own fundraising pages. Although the race has had similar systems in the past, this year’s online fundraising total quadrupled over 2006, showing a trend toward Internet use.

The 2007 race broke attendance records with more than 3,800 registrants, a 12 percent increase over 2006.

To date, the Komen Maine Affiliate has granted more than $1 million in Maine to education, screening and treatment programs. Of the $350,000 the Komen Maine Affiliate has contributed to national research programs, $250,000 of it recently returned to Maine in the form of a grant to The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor.
