‘Tis the season for heavenly quilts, crafts

BANGOR – It’s November, the season of falling leaves, the brisk edge in the air, the time of impending cold when thoughts turn to warmth – and quilts glowing in all their cotton and colorful glory.

The All Souls Congregational Church quilt show, which began in 2004 as an idea to attract more visitors to the church’s Christmas bazaar, has now become an annual event organized by the Holy Stitchers, a community quilting group that meets at the church. Some of the quilt group members are All Souls parishioners, and some attend other churches.

The quilt show and bazaar is scheduled for 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the church at 10 Broadway.

The 10 members of the Holy Stitchers are piecing and patching, getting ready for the quilt show.

“More than 100 quilts will be on display,” said Kathy Hicks of the Holy Stitchers. The quilts, a mix of old, new and antique, will fill the sanctuary of All Souls.

They will be draped over pews and hung from balcony railings. Individuals from throughout the area loan quilts for the display, but several of the quilts will be the work of the Holy Stitchers, quilts they have been creating at work sessions held twice each month.

Some of the quilts at the show will be available for sale.

“The Hancock County Quilters lend many quilts for the show,” said Holy Stitcher member Barbara Herget.

Quilts on display will feature a range of quilting styles and techniques from contemporary to historic, including hand quilting, machine quilting, crazy quilts, patchwork and applique in a dizzying array of color, personal interpretation and artistic vision.

Each year the quilt show has drawn enthusiastic viewers eager to be inspired by the designs and workmanship; to view quilts that are rarely, if ever, on public display; and to revel in the artistry each quilt represents.

Admission to the quilt show is $3. Admission to the bazaar is free.

Members of the Holy Stitchers who work all year to make quilts – for charitable organizations, local Head Start programs or the Linus Project – and who organize the quilt show, are Theresa Bragg, Elizabeth Daub, Liane Giambalvo, Alcinda Hall, Barbara Herget, Kathy Hicks, Faye Johnson, Carol Kulberg, Ann Parke, Nancy Smith, Cora Swalec and Lynn White.

The Holy Stitchers meet 9-11 a.m. the first and third Fridays of each month at All Souls. Those who wish may join the group or simply drop by to stitch and learn as their time allows. Call Lynn White at 862-6847 for information about the group and its quilting activities.

Members of the public who have quilts – new, vintage or in between – they would like to lend for next year’s quilt show also may call White to learn more about what that entails.
