UNITY – Leadership students at Unity College will serve as volunteers for a Thanksgiving Day meal at the former site of Bangor Theological Seminary, located between Union and Hammond streets.

Manna Inc. food pantry of Bangor sponsors the event.

Third-year Unity College student Josh Youse, an adventure education leadership major from Kutztown, Pa., who is taking the leadership class that will serve as volunteers, offered the idea for service at Thanksgiving during a class trip.

“Ten students and one instructor from this leadership class will be on a weeklong backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail in Maine over the Thanksgiving break,” Youse said. “Since we were going to be away from our families at Thanksgiving, I thought it would be good to serve as volunteers.”

The students expect to travel early on Thanksgiving Day to Bangor from Monson as part of their weeklong hike.

Public service is a core value at Unity College, Youse said.

“Volunteering to help with a Thanksgiving meal is just one event, but doing what you can to pursue public service whenever possible is ideal,” Youse said.

“Our message is that doing what you can, even if it is just taking time out for service at Thanksgiving, really helps individuals, service organizations and communities,” he added.
