Outlook: The Black Bears want to continue the momentum generated by back-to-back wins and 80-plus point totals, not to mention a dramatic, come-from-behind overtime victory Saturday. The Bobcats are coming off a loss to America East member Binghamton, but beat AE team Hartford in double overtime to start the season. Maine must continue winning the battle of the boards and cutting down turnovers. The Bears are averaging 67.5 points and 44.8 rebounds per game while opponents are averaging 57.0 and 33.8, respectively. That trend needs to continue for the young Maine men to keep maturing while at the same time experiencing success and increasing team confidence.

Women’s hockey

Series, last meeting: tied 3-3; Maine 3-2 on 2/18/07

Key players: Maine – RW Vanessa Vani (3 goals, 5 assists), C Taryn Peacock (2 & 6), LW Amy Stech (3 & 1), RW Robyn Law (1 & 1), D Elyce Thomas (2 & 0), D Kim Meagher (0 & 1), G Genevieve Turgeon (1-7-1, 3.46 GAA, .917 save pct.); BU – C Gina Kearns (2 & 8), D Julie Poulin (2 & 7), C Melissa Anderson (5 & 3), LW Erin Seman (2 & 6), D Amanda Shaw (3 & 4), D Sarah Appleton (3 & 4), G Allyse Wilcox (2-4-1, 1.94, .924)

Outlook: Maine has lost nine straight and is winless in its last 12 (0-11-1) while BU has lost three in a row. BU won two of the three meetings a year ago. Poulin returns to Orono after transferring from Maine following the 2005-06 season. Both teams have had trouble scoring. BU has been held to two goals or fewer eight times, while Maine hasn’t scored more than two goals in any of its last 12 games. The Bears did show some offensive promise in the 4-2 loss to No. 9 Connecticut on Friday, generating 33 shots on goal. It was Maine’s best game of the season, according to coach Dan Lichterman. BU is fast and young and the Bears will hope to exploit their mistakes. It’s just the third year of BU’s varsity program under coach Brian Durocher, a former BU star goalie and co-captain and men’s assistant coach/recruiting coordinator.
