Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition to lead hike

BELFAST – The Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition will lead a hike along the newly completed Little River Community Trail on Saturday, Dec. 8.

The trail was officially opened last month and was constructed in part with funds from the Project Canopy Grant from the Maine Forest Service along with help from several local businesses and many volunteer hours donated by adults and students.

The 41/2-mile walk begins at the Belfast Water District’s Little River dam off Route 1 and ends by the Walsh Ball Field on Route 52. The trail runs along the river and through pine and hemlock woods, offering habitat for resident winter birds. Participants should meet at 10 a.m. in the water district parking lot off Route 1. Participants are reminded to wear warm clothing and bring lunch and water. The hike is free and open to the public. For information, contact Skip Pendleton at 338-4427.

The Belfast Bay Watershed is made up of four smaller watersheds: Little River, Passagassawakeag River, Wescott Stream and Goose River, a total area of 69,657 acres, including all or parts of Brooks, Frankfort, Knox, Morrill, Northport, Searsport, Swanville, Waldo and Belfast.
