“The Mist,” the latest movie adaptation of a story by Bangor author Stephen King, opens in theaters nationwide today. Check listings for local screenings.
The movie, directed by Frank Darabont, tells the story of a small Maine town where a devastating summer storm blows through, followed the next day by the slow spread of a dense, white fog. The otherworldly mist hides a creeping, deadly truth, and a small band of survivors holes up in a supermarket, each of them struggling with their fate.
Darabont, who wrote the screenplay, also directed two other films based on King’s work, “The Shawshank Redemption” and “The Green Mile.”
“The Mist” stars Thomas Jane, Andre Braugher, Marcia Gay Harden and Toby Jones.
King’s novella first appeared in 1980, in “Dark Forces,” a horror anthology edited by Kirby McCauley. It later was included in King’s short story collection “Skeleton Crew.”
