On the heels of Black Friday comes Cyber Monday, when Americans return to work and get busy – shopping online.

Cyber Monday was coined in 2005 to describe a noticeable increase in online shopping sales the Monday after Thanksgiving. Data from the National Retail Federation show that most Cyber Monday shoppers make their purchases from the office.

“As more people rely on the Internet for holiday shopping, retailers have stepped up their game to compete,” said Scott Silverman, executive director of Shop.org, a division of the NRF. “This year, promotions on Cyber Monday are extremely competitive as online retailers use an assortment of one-day specials to send shoppers online.”

Although more than half of U.S. homes have high-speed Internet access, 54.5 percent of office workers with Internet access will shop from the office this year, according to Shop.org. That’s up substantially from 2005, when 44.7 percent of office workers with Internet access shopped from the office.

L.L. Bean is offering free shipping on all orders placed on its Web site and over the phone before Dec. 21. On one of its busiest days last year, L.L. Bean received more than 80,000 orders on its Web site. That’s more than 3,000 orders an hour. The company does not have any sales specific to Cyber Monday but puts up special sales exclusive to its Web site each day.
