Gold medalist McClure to speak at boxing show

SEARSPORT – Dr. Wilbert “Skeeter” McClure, sports psychologist and light middleweight gold medal winner for the 1960 U.S. Olympic Boxing Team, will be the featured speaker at tonight’s boxing show hosted by Wyman’s Boxing Club of Stockton Springs.

McClure’s roommate at the Rome Olympics was Cassius Clay, who later gained worldwide fame as Muhammad Ali. McClure still holds the world record as an amateur of 117 wins and no losses. He was the winner of three national and three world championships. As a professional, he once fought Ruben “Hurricane” Carter.

Tonight’s fights at Searsport High School will feature three local boxers associated with Wyman’s Boxing Club along with boxers from throughout New England and Atlantic Canada. Twelve bouts will be held beginning at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

Ringside seats are $25. General admission is $15 with students and members of the military at $10. Children under 10 get in free.
