Golden Eagles knock off Black Bears

MILWAUKEE – Marquette University defeated the University of Maine 3-1 in the Battle for the Bird Tournament Friday.

The host Golden Eagles rallied from an opening game loss to win the match 17-30, 31-29, 30-21, 33-31 and improve their record to 9-16. Maine sinks to 3-23.

Junior Lindsay Allman led the Black Bears with 13 kills and 11 digs. Margaret Page had 11 kills of her own and Laura Goettsch had 14 digs. Paige Tortorello had 37 assists.

Kimberley Todd had 17 kills and 17 digs for the Golden Eagles. Katie Weidner made 41 assists and Rabbecka Gonyo had seven blocks.

Maine takes on South Dakota State at noon today.

Men’s basketball

Framingham 82, UMFK 66

At Boston, Bill Carey led four Framingham State College players in double figures with 26 as the Rams defeated the University of Maine-Fort Kent in the Harbor Invitational.

The Bengals will take on UMass Boston in the consolation game. UMass Boston fell to Lesley College.

Michael Costa scored 18 points and Josue Almodvar had 13 while Royce Veal chipped in with 11 for Framingham State.

Othniel Hyliger and Jimmy Lopez led the Bengals with 15 points apiece. David Gabriel had 12 points while Gediminas Sumyla added 10. Hyliger and Gabriel each posted 10 rebounds for UMFK.
