Publication seeks data on veterans

Page 14, the sailor in the lower left-hand corner, that’s my dad, Gayland A. Moore Jr. of Abbot. I am, of course, talking about the Mid-Maine edition of Paper Talks, Volume I honoring World War II veterans in that area.

On the same page with my dad are John P. Richards of Greenville and Eugene P. Goulette of Guilford. All three servicemen on page 14 are gone now, so isn’t it great to have this magazine to remember them? And of course there are lots of living WWII veterans in the magazine as well.

And yes, there’s genealogy. Most of the entries include the person’s parents, spouse and children.

Check out page 29, with photos of all six Carr brothers from Abbot, who spanned World War II and Korea: Dana, Richard, Clifton Jr., Philip, Alton and Merton. Clifton Jr. was killed in Korea and earned the Purple Heart, Croix de Guerre, Silver Star and Bronze Star. Alton also earned the Bronze Star.

On the opposite page is a nifty photo of American Legion Post 105 in Newport honoring State Cmdr. Bob Merrow in 1956.

A 1948 photo on page 41 shows Neal Lunt, John Clark Jr., Larry Clark, Bob Knowlton, Boyd Fuller, Paul Libby, Ralph Lee, Herman Bragg, Dan Spearin and Francis Mavor Clark during a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial in Albion. A separate photo is of Harry Yeaton.

Editor Pierre Dumont sent along an update on future issues of Paper Talks, and we’re hoping that readers will send in a photo and information for World War II veterans for the issues that still need them.

Volume II for Mid-Maine will be out next November, with about half the photos already in for that issue. More are needed. You can check the current issue to see which veterans they already have for 2008, including four brothers from Monson and four from Atkinson.

Some 200 more photos and information are needed for the Greater Bangor issue, which will be published in June 2008.

At least 150 photos and info still are needed for Hancock County, which will be published in late summer 2008.

Volume II for Washington County is full and will be published in February 2008. New photos and information will be included in 2009.

Volume II for Northern Penobscot County, due out in April, is full. Further photos and information will be published in 2009.

Pictures for Paper Talks need to be real photographs, not photocopies or laser copies. Send photo from time of military service in World War II to Paper Talks Magazine, P.O. Box 219, Jonesboro 04648. Include name and return address on the back so that it can be returned.

You also can scan a photo at good resolution, such as 300 dpi, and e-mail it to info@papertalks.com

I sent a jpeg of my dad’s photo, and it came out really well.

As for the information, either e-mail Pierre or write him at the above address for the questionnaire to fill out. Or, you may call 862-4508.
