PORTLAND – The National Endowment for the Arts has awarded $25,000 to Phippsburg novelist Ellen Cooney, $15,000 to the Portland Stage Company, $10,000 to the Portland Concert Association and $40,000 to Bowdoin College.

Cooney will receive a stipend that will allow her to devote a year to fiction writing.

The matching grant to the Portland Stage Company will support the world premiere production of “Magnetic North” by William Donnelly.

The matching grant to the Portland Concert Association will support the commissioning and presentation of dance, music and theater works to be accompanied by public events.

The matching grant to Bowdoin College will support the college museum’s touring exhibition, “Paula Modersohn-Becker: Figurative Paintings,” with an accompanying catalog.
