Longtime George Stevens of Blue Hill athletic administrator Jim Murphy has been awarded a National Federation of State High School Associations Citation, which he will receive Dec. 18 at the NFHS annual conference in Nashville, Tenn.
Murphy, who is one of eight high school athletic directors from across the country to receive a citation this year, is the sixth AD from the state to earn the honor. Biddeford’s Don Wilson was a recipient last year. The citations are presented annually to athletic directors in recognition of contributions at the local, state and national levels.
Murphy has been a teacher and coach at GSA since 1974 and the athletic director since 1984. He has coached baseball, basketball and golf, and teaches accounting and business math. He led the effort to build new fields for the school and GSA teams have won five Maine Principals’ Association sportsmanship banners in his tenure.
Murphy is a past president of the Maine Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association and serves on the MPA baseball and basketball committees. He was the MIAAA Athletic Administrator of the Year in 2006.
