Children’s International Summer Villages

BREWER – The Maine Chapter of CISV USA is accepting applications for people ages 11-18 to participate as delegates in international camps and exchange programs next summer.

Destinations abroad in the coming year are Finland, Germany, Denmark, Costa Rica, Norway and Great Britain.

The deadline for applications is Saturday, Dec. 15.

An information session to learn more about the programs and hear about the experiences of the 2007 delegates will be held 4:30-6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at the Brewer High School cafeteria.

CISV is an independent, nonprofit, nonpolitical, volunteer organization that offers children, youth and adults the opportunity to make new friendships worldwide, and to understand and appreciate different cultures. Its mission is to promote peace education, to learn about other cultures through close friendships and to accept others without prejudice or stereotypes.

Applications also are being accepted for leaders 21 years and older to accompany the Maine youth delegations representing the United States. CISV-Maine will select delegates and leaders for the following 2008 international programs:

. Villages four-week programs for 11-year-olds in delegations of two boys, two girls and an adult leader from 12 nations in Lappeenranta, Finland, June 27-July 24; and Munich, Germany, Aug. 8-Sept. 4. Two female leaders are needed to accompany the delegations.

. Junior Counselor ages 16-17, to assist staff and leaders at a CISV Village in Oppland, Norway, dates to be announced, for a female delegate; and in Jacksonville, Fla., June 6-July 24, for a male delegate.

. Interchange, a cultural exchange for boys and girls ages 13-14, to spend two weeks with CISV peers and their families in Denmark, and for the Danish CISV interchange delegates to spend two weeks in Maine with their CISV Maine counterparts. Dates to be announced. A leader is needed to accompany the U.S. delegation.

. Summer Camp for 14-year-olds, two boys and two girls, Dec. 27, 2008, to Jan. 18, 2009, in San Jose, Costa Rica. A male or female leader age 21 or older is needed to accompany the Maine delegation.

. Seminar Camp, a three-week camp with individual delegates ages 17-18 from up to 20 nations, in Manchester, Great Britain, Aug. 4-24, for a male delegate.

Central High School

CORINTH – The National Honor Society at Central High School held its annual induction ceremony on Nov. 15. New members inducted are Casey Clark, Ben Commeau, Brittany Cote, Veronica Davis, Harley Denis, Maddie Dunakin, Nick Harvey, Stephen LaFlamme, Nicole La Marche, Kelsi McHugh, Randi McHugh, Andrew McLaughlin, Magan Mishio, Troy O’Bar, Justine Portmann, Kristi Rouse, Brett Speed, Jacob Speed and Rachel Trafton.

They were chosen based on academic performance, leadership skills, community service participation and character.

Home school class

HOLDEN – Field’s Pond Audubon Center will present a home school class, Rockin’ with Rocks, 10 a.m.-noon Wednesday, Dec. 5. Class size is limited to 15 for students ages 8-14.

Aimee Noble will help students discover the rock cycle and the world of geology. Students will learn how rocks are formed by the fire of volcanoes, by wind and water, and by heat and pressure deep within the Earth. If time and weather permit, students will learn to identify minerals and explore the rocks of Fields Pond.

The class will complete most of the requirements for a geology badge for Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. The cost is $10 one child, $18 two children. To register a child for the class, call the center at 989-2591.

Colleges

Open house at MMA

CASTINE – Maine Maritime Academy will hold an open house for prospective students and their parents on Saturday, Dec. 8.

Registration will take place 7:30-8:30 a.m. in the Harold Alfond Student Center. A continental breakfast and lunch are free to all participants.

Jeffrey C. Wright, director of admissions, and other college officers will conduct programs about academic majors, extracurricular activities and options in student lifestyles.
