Davis paces UMPI Balance helps Owls tip Monks

STANDISH – Erica Davis led four UMaine-Presque Isle players in double figures with 19 points as the Owls defeated the College of St. Joseph 62-48 Saturday in the consolation game of the Merry Monk Classic.

Megan Korhonen scored 15 points while Julie Wescott and Anna Lenentine each chipped in with 10 for UMPI.

Irene Tompkins paced the College of St. Joseph’s with 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Mariners win two in Classic

At Castine, Maine Maritime Academy notched a pair of victories in the Mariner Classic held this weekend.

The Mariners won their first game Saturday 67-48 over the UM-Machias and defeated UM-Fort Kent 71-53 Sunday.

On Saturday, Megan Franklin led the way for the Mariners with 10 points and 17 rebounds.

Sara Wells and Jenna Hare each scored 11 points to pace UM-Machias.

On Sunday, Kaitlyn Leeman scored 14 points while Ashley Tilton tallied 11 points and 11 rebounds for Maine Maritime.

Ashley Ames led the University of Maine-Fort Kent with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

In other games, the Wentworth Institute of Technology defeated UM-Machias 85-65 on Sunday. Emily Cring registered 22 points for Wentworth. Felicia Herring paced the Clippers with 18 points while Sara Wells added 12.

Wentworth also held off the UM-Fort Kent 61-59 in overtime on Saturday. Angela Tucker led the Leopards with 22 points while Arcilla Jeffers and Alisa Licata each posted 16 points for the Bengals.

Colby takes invitational

At Farmington Sunday, Artie Cutrone scored four points in the final 42 seconds and finished with 19 to power Colby to an 83-77 victory over UMaine-Farmington in the championship game of the Colby Invitational.

Elms won the consolation game 86-64 over Fisher. UMF beat Fisher 89-62 and Colby edged Elms 113-109 in overtime Saturday to reach Sunday’s final.

The tournament was held at UMF because of court renovations at Colby in Waterville.

In Sunday’s championship game, Colby’s Mac Simpson contributed 18 points and five steals. Adam Choice had 20 points and 10 rebounds. Andrew Dean paced UMF with 20 points.

Cutrone was named the tournament MVP. Matt St. John and Sean Fry of UMF, Juan Galdon of Elms and Louis Williams of Fisher were named to the all-tourney team.

In Saturday’s first game, Mark Gaudet poured in 37 points, including the final six points in regulation as the host White Mules earned the win. Curtone had 26 points and Simpson added 24. Galdon paced Elms with 36 points.

In Saturday’s second game, Fry tallied 18 points and nine rebounds as the Beavers rolled. Matt St. John added 17 points. Williams had a game-high 31 for Fisher.
