Stags stop Bears UMaine drops sixth straight

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Baendu Lowenthal scored six points as Fairfield University opened the second half with a 15-0 scoring run Sunday afternoon that carried the Stags to a convincing 76-54 women’s basketball victory over Maine at Alumni Hall.

Fairfield (6-1) shot 49 percent from the field, hitting nine of 19 shots from 3-point range, while handing the Black Bears (1-6) their sixth straight setback.

Coach Cindy Blodgett’s UMaine squad spotted the hosts an early 10-point advantage and were unable to get closer than six points after that.

The Bears shot a solid 44 percent from the floor, but went 11-for-24 from the foul line. They also committed 22 turnovers, which led to 19 points by the Stags.

Amanda Tewksbury had her second straight double-digit scoring effort, netting a team-high 12 points for UMaine. She also made three steals.

Colleen Kilmurray posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Brittany Boser added eight points. Freshman Christina Mosher of Farmington had her best outing as a Bear, contributing six points and four rebounds in 17 minutes.

UMaine outrebounded Fairfield 34-32.

Lowenthal tallied a game-high 18 points on 8-for-11 shooting to lead the Stags. Sabra Wrice scored 16 points and added three assists and three steals.

Stephanie Geehan chipped in with 12 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Lauren Groom added 11 points.

Fairfield started to pull away in the latter stages of the first half, after a Tewksbury jumper had pulled the Bears within 23-17 at the 6:26 mark.

When Geehan finally broke a two-minute scoring drought by both teams with 4:16 remaining, it jumpstarted a game-changing 16-4 Fairfield surge going into halftime.

Niya Santiago’s desperation 3-pointer with two seconds left in the half completed the run that gave the Stags a 39-21 advantage.

Fairfield kept the momentum going, scoring the first 15 points of the second half on its way to a commanding 34-point advantage.

Mosher finally scored UMaine’s first field goal of the second half at the 15:16 mark, by which time the outcome had pretty much been determined.

UMaine returns to action Saturday with a noon nonleague game at Massachusetts of the Atlantic 10 Conference.
