Two weekend events benefit Bangor’s sister city

Two events will offer you the “chance to support fair trade and the economic development of our sister community,” Carasque, El Salvador, “while buying beautiful gifts for your family and friends,” wrote Peace through Interamerican Community Action director Jon Falk.

First up is POTS for PICA, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at Friars’ Bakehouse on Central Street in Bangor, where Susan Dickson-Smith of Proper Clay Stoneware is holding her annual pottery sale to benefit PICA.

You can view her work at www.properclay.com.

Next is PICA’s annual holiday sale featuring handmade goods from Carasque.

The sale is 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, at PICA, 170 Park St. in Bangor.

For information, call PICA at 947-4203, e-mail info@pica.ws or visit www.pica.ws.

Jen Brooks of Penquis reports that organization “will be distributing toys to families in need in Piscataquis County, thanks to donations from the United Bikers of Maine and Toys for Tots.”

Interested families should call the Penquis Dover-Foxcroft office at 564-7116 no later than noon Friday, Dec. 7.

Lorraine Mitchell called to remind area residents the Calais Lioness Santa Parade is set to begin at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at Johnson’s True Value Hardware and will proceed through downtown Calais.

Boy Scout Troop 82 of Bucksport scribe Corey Bouton e-mailed to say that troop is hosting a bake sale 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Bucksport True Value Hardware store.

According to the e-mail, “the boys have been busy making cookies, breads, peanut butter balls and other candies as well as some Christmas centerpieces.”

Norma Binan reports the Bangor Area Chapter of the American Sewing Guild is hosting a class from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Hampden Municipal Building on Western Avenue.

The class will focus on how to make “Easy Peasy PJs,” which are made from a one-piece pattern, and it also will talk about the serger, a machine that cuts and stitches edges, Binan said.

The cost is $10 for members and $15 for nonmembers, and Binan promises you “it will be a fun class.”

For information, call her at 862-4367.

Waterville High School teacher and event chairman Rosemarie Smith invites you to the holiday craft fair hosted by the senior class to benefit Project Graduation from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at WHS.

The fair is held in conjunction with the Project Graduation Christmas tree sale that, Smith explained, is now a 20-year tradition.

The craft fair, which began in 2001, boasts more than 70 crafters including for-profit crafters and the nonprofits from the school and the community, she wrote.

This year, “a cat rescue group from Winthrop and a Knights of Columbus group from Waterville are joining us for the first time,” she added.

The event also features holiday musical performances and movies, a children’s area, and lunch and goodies in the Candy Cane Cafe.

For information, Smith is available for phone calls between 2:15 and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday at 873-2751, or e-mail rsmith@fc.wtvl.k12.me.us.

Eastern Maine Orchid Society member May Pardy invites you to its annual holiday luncheon and auction at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Whig & Courier Pub in downtown Bangor.

“Buy your lunch and stay for the auction,” Pardy wrote.

“Bid on many wonderful orchid plants and orchid-related items.

“All proceeds from the auction will go to a local charity, and you do not need to be a member to attend.”

MSAD 3 school board member and jewelry artist Lisa Cooley of Molten Mama Lampwork Beads and Jewelry is hosting an open studio and holiday jewelry sale 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at her studio, 238 Hadley Mill Road in Jackson.

Cooley will give demonstrations and discuss the ancient art of glass bead making during the day, and 20 percent of proceeds from sales of her work will benefit FUTURE MSAD 3, “the group raising funds to enhance the new Mount View K-12 complex,” she wrote.

“Playing with hot glass and improving education here in MSAD 3 are the two things that occupy me the most. I love to use one of my obsessions to benefit the other.”

Barbara Csavinszky called to point out I misread the location for one of the Holiday Hullabaloo celebrations: Cocoa and carols, treats and a special holiday display begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Old Town Museum, not the library, as I wrote in Wednesday’s column.
