USM reports progress in mumps vaccinations

PORTLAND – The number of students banned from the University of Southern Maine’s campuses in Gorham and Portland for failing to meet vaccination requirements for mumps is down to about 300.

Spokeswoman Judie O’Malley says 40 more students got vaccines by Thursday evening and another 90 provided satisfactory documentation. She says nearly all of the 49 residence hall students have been contacted and most are complying with the requirements.

All told, about 1,300 full-time or residence hall students on the two campuses had been notified that Thursday was the deadline for meeting the latest requirements of two inoculations for the mumps.

The university is following guidelines set forth by the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention after a student came down with a case of the mumps.
