Hoop Shoot contest

BANGOR – The Bangor Lodge of Elks will hold its Hoop Shoot free throw contest on Sunday, Dec. 16, at the James F. Doughty School on Fifth Street. The schedule is:

. 8- and 9-year-olds, 10:15 a.m.

. 10- and 11-year-olds, 11:15 a.m.

. 12- and 13-year-olds, 12:15 p.m.

Participants will receive a free T-shirt. First-, second- and third-place trophies will be awarded. For information, call Shawn Stacey at 990-3132.

Basketball tournaments

The dates for the Maine AAU Basketball Tournaments have been set: the Girls State Tournamen, April 20 and 25-27, and the Boys State Tournament, April 26-27 and May 2-3. Information is available at

The third annual End of Winter League will run Feb. 9-March 16. However, no school or AAU teams will play Feb. 23-24.

The AAU annual meeting will take place Sunday, Jan. 27, at Howard Sports in Saco. The girls meeting is at 11 a.m., and the boys meeting is at 12:30 p.m. For directions, visit www.howardsports.com and click on the Saco site.

In working with Adidas Phenom Top 150 Camps, any player who wishes to try out for an AAU team may attend the camp. AAU coaches will be there to evaluate players. Call Lenny Holmes or visit www.mbnation.org for information.

Athletes who wish to play but are unable to find a team may contact Maine Hoops or register through a clearinghouse at www.mainebasketball.com, where lists of players looking for teams and coaches looking for players are posted.

Skiing, snowboarding

ORONO – The Orono Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for skiing and snowboarding lessons.

Snowboarding lessons for fourth through seventh grade, and downhill skiing lessons for second through seventh grade will be held Wednesdays, Jan. 16-Feb. 6, at Hermon Mountain.

The cost for snowboarding is $85 for Orono residents, $95 for others. The cost for ski lessons is $75 for Orono residents, $85 for others. Fees include transportation and equipment rental, if needed.

Programs have a minimum and maximum enrollment, so register early. For information, call the recreation office at 866-5065.
