WEST GARDINER – Maine state troopers are investigating the brazen robbery of a motorist from Rhode Island on Interstate 95.

Troopers say two men in a pickup truck forced the man’s vehicle off the road Wednesday evening, then pulled over as if to ask if he was OK. Instead, the two men allegedly subdued the man with pepper spray and took his wallet, along with a Sony PlayStation video console and a portable PlayStation.

Robert Simpkins of Warwick, R.I., lost $135 in his wallet and all of his identification. The stolen merchandise was valued at $1,200.

Trooper Lee Vanadestine says he believes the men intended to steal Simpkins’ Suzuki X-90 but failed to do so because he had removed the key.
