MAINE vs. NEW HAMPSHIRE
Time, site: Sunday, 4 p.m.; Whittemore Center, Durham, N.H.
Records: Maine 5-6-2 (3-4-2 Hockey East); UNH 8-4-1 (5-4-1 HE)
Series, last meeting: Maine leads 53-39-5, UNH 2-1 on 02/03/07
Key players: Maine – C Wes Clark (2 goals, 7 assists), D Bret Tyler (4 & 4), LW Billy Ryan (2 & 4), RW Rob Bellamy (1 & 5), LW Matt Duffy (4 & 1), D Simon Danis-Pepin (0 & 1), G Ben Bishop (5-6-2, 2.36 GAA, .919 save pct.); UNH – RW Matt Fornataro (6 & 11), LW James vanRiemsdyk (6 & 9), C Mike Radja (8 & 4), D Brad Flaishans (4 & 8), RW Paul Thompson (6 & 4), LW Jerry Pollastrone (4 & 6), G Kevin Regan (6-3, 2.46, .912)
Outlook: Maine is 2-9-1 in its last 12 visits to the Whittemore Center and the Bears have lost their last three in Durham. The Whittemore Center is an Olympic-sized ice sheet (200 feet by 100 feet), 15 feet wider than Maine’s Alfond Arena. The Black Bears, especially the freshmen, will have to avoid overhandling the puck, which is a natural tendency on a wider ice sheet. UNH is an exceptional transition team and will generate odd-man rushes off turnovers. Maine has to protect the puck. Regan has been tough on the Bears, posting a 4-2 record with a 2.00 GAA and a .945 save percentage. Maine has to establish a netfront presence against Regan. Maine will get its first look at power forward vanRiemsdyk, the second overall pick (by Philadelphia) in last summer’s NHL draft. UNH (9.4 percent) and Maine (7.9 percent) have the worst power plays in Hockey East. Maine snapped a six-game winless streak (0-4-2) against Merrimack on Saturday. UNH has lost two straight.
Men’s basketball
MAINE vs. MOUNT ST. MARY’S
Time, site: Saturday, 2 p.m.; Alfond Arena, Orono
Records: Maine 4-5, Mount St. Mary’s (Md.) 4-4
Series, last meeting: Maine leads 1-0, Maine 68-65 on 11/29/06
Key players: Maine – 6-9 C Brian Andre (14.4 ppg, 6.2 rpg, .636 FG pct.), 6-5 G Mark Socoby (12.2 ppg, 7.2 rpg, 2.3 apg, 1.9 spg), 6-5 G Junior Bernal (11.3 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 2.9 apg, 2.1 spg), 6-7 F Troy Barnies (7.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg), 6-4 G Jason Hight (4.6 ppg, 2.7 apg); Mt. St. Mary’s – 5-9 G Jeremy Goode (15.9 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 5.7 apg, 2.7 spg), 6-0 G Chris Vann (14.6 ppg, .440 3-pt. FG pct.), 6-4 G/F Will Holland (10.8 ppg, 4.0 rpg), 6-7 F Sam Atupem (8.0 ppg, 3.9 rpg), 6-7 F Markus Mitchell (5.1 ppg, 5.1 rpg)
Outlook: The Bears return home after absorbing a 95-55 thumping Saturday at Florida State. Maine has lost three of its last four, but is 3-1 at Alfond Arena. Mount St. Mary’s of Emmitsburg, Md., has won four in a row after dropping its first four games. The Mountaineers, who edged Central Connecticut 60-59 Saturday, play in the Northeast Conference. Maine has already beaten NEC members St. Francis (N.Y.) and Quinnipiac this season. The Bears are led by the trio of Andre, Socoby and Bernal but continue to look for more offensive diversity. The return of Barnies has aided that quest. The Mountaineers have played tough defense of late, allowing an average of 57.5 ppg during their win streak. Mount St. Mary’s (1,526 students) is the fifth-smallest Division I school.
