ORONO – A local woman died Sunday after apparently being run over accidentally in her Essex Street driveway by a heavy-duty pickup truck driven by her husband, according to police.

Mary Simpson, 51, and her husband, Kenneth Simpson, 61, were getting ready to do some plowing shortly before 4:30 p.m., according to Orono police Capt. Josh Ewing.

“She got out of the vehicle to go get something from the house,” Ewing said.

Kenneth Simpson apparently didn’t see that his wife was behind the truck and backed over her.

After realizing what he’d done, the man brought his wife into the garage and attempted CPR, but she was unresponsive. Paramedics who were called to the house also attempted CPR, but the woman was declared dead at the scene.

“We’re very confident that it was an accidental death,” Ewing said.

Orono police have concluded their investigation in conjunction with the state medical examiner’s office.
