KITTERY – A Maine-based Coast Guard cutter was responding to a report of a sailboat adrift in 12-foot seas 270 miles east of Cape Cod on Thursday evening.

The 29-foot sailboat Grail Pilgrin was motoring from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Bermuda when it experienced engine failure early Thursday. The Tahoma, based in Kittery, was expected to meet up with the vessel Thursday night to retrieve the lone occupant, a Canadian.

Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., was on standby to assist if needed.
