Winterport teenager killed retrieving gas grill on I-95

BANGOR – A Winterport teenager was struck and killed Christmas Eve on Interstate 95 near the Bangor Mall when he walked onto a southbound lane to retrieve a gas grill that had fallen out of the back of the pickup truck he was driving.

Matthew Osborne, 17, was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, Maine State Police Trooper Josh D’Angelo said Monday night.

The accident occurred at 5:30 p.m., about half an hour after the Bangor Mall and stores in the area closed down for the holiday.

Tina Hatcher, 45, of Dedham told police she had pulled into the passing lane to avoid the gas grill and did not see Osborne when she struck him.

She has not been charged, according to D’Angelo.

The southbound lanes of I-95 between Hogan Road and Stillwater Avenue were shut down for more than two hours, according to police. The Interstate reopened about 8 p.m.

Bangor police were called to Hogan Road to help redirect southbound traffic off the interstate to the Stillwater Avenue entrance ramp.
