Bangor Countdown

Following is the lineup of Downtown Countdown events leading up to the annual midnight ball drop at West Market Square. Events are listed by venue:

. Bangor Opera House – 4 p.m., “The Iron Giant”; 7 p.m., live folk music with Generations; 8 p.m., “A Looney Tune New Year!” 8:30 p.m., Generations; 9:30 p.m., “A Looney Tune New Year!” 10 p.m., Generations; 11 p.m., “A Looney Tune New Year!”

. Unitarian Universalist Church – 5:30-7 p.m., spaghetti dinner ($8 adults, $5 kids, $20 family of four); 7:30-8 p.m., contradance instruction; 8-11:30 p.m., contradance featuring Ladies of the Lake.

. Bangor City Hall – Bangor Center Corp. presents: 6 p.m., John Bapst Chamber Chorale; 7:15 p.m., Maximum Blue (Max and Jeff Silverstein); 8:30 p.m., Elizabeth Ellis, traditional Irish fiddling; 9:30 p.m., In Other Words, jazz, blues, pop and folk.

. Bangor Public Library, 6-10 p.m., 125th birthday celebration and costume party; 6:30-8:30 p.m., RetroRockerz; 6:30-9 p.m., dance lessons with Robinson Ballet; 9:30-10:30 p.m., RetroRockerz.

. Hammond Street Senior Center, 8-11:30 p.m., 1940s and 1950s live piano music with Betty Severance, dancing, games for all ages.

. Bagel Central, 7-11:30 p.m., live blues and rock with Ragged Moon.

. Union Street Brick Church, 7-8:30 p.m., WKIT, funk and rock music, dancing; 8:30-11:30 p.m., live music with Big Time.

. Lippincott Books, 10-11 p.m., hot cider and poetry readings featuring Bruce Pratt and Anne Britting Oleson.

. The Maine Edge tailgate party, 21 Main St.

. Columbia Street Baptist Church, 8 p.m., food and games for children by New Life Ministries; 10 p.m., video about outer space followed by live Christian rock with Nealleys Corner.

. Hammond Street Congregational Church, 6-9 p.m., fun and games for children; 7-8 p.m., dance lessons for children.

. Maine Discovery Museum, 4-5:45 p.m., making hats and noisemakers; 6 p.m., early New Year’s kid-style “count up” and museum parade, Fairmount Park Band featuring the Picone family. (Free admission after 3 p.m.)

. Briar Patch, 6:30-11:30 p.m., board games for ages 8 and up.

. Bangor Symphony Orchestra instrument “petting zoo” and other children’s activities at BSO office at 51A Main St.

. Also part of Downtown Countdown but taking place on Sunday, Dec. 30, is the Epic Sports 5K Finale, which kicks off at 10 a.m. (Early registration, $5; race day, $15). Call 941-5670 for information.
