Bangor to count down the Eve

BANGOR – Ring in the new year with music, food, dancing, films and the annual ball drop in West Market Square at the Downtown Countdown 2007 New Year’s Eve celebration from late afternoon to midnight Monday, Dec. 31. Put on your boogey shoes, wear a costume and ride free on BAT buses from the Pickering Square parking garage to venues:

Bangor Opera House

. 4 p.m.,”The Iron Giant,” an animated film that takes place in Maine. Rated PG for fantasy action and mild language.

. 7 p.m. Live folk music with Generations. Members are Leslie Latour, Larry Latour, Joel Gold and Kathy Sikkema.

. 8 p.m. “A Looney Tune New Year,” Warner Bros. cartoon short film.

. 8:30 p.m., Generations.

. 9:30 p.m., “A Looney Tune New Year.”

. 10 p.m., Generations.

. 11 p.m. “A Looney Tune New Year.”

River City Cinema projectionist. Food and beverage concessions.

Unitarian Universalist Church, 120 Park St.

. 5:30-7 p.m., spaghetti supper. $8, $5 children, $20 family of four.

. 7:30-8 p.m., contradance instruction.

. 8-11:30 p.m., contradance with caller John McIntyre and Ladies of the Lake, an all-female Celtic band.

. 6 p.m., John Bapst Memorial High School Chamber Chorale.

. 7:15 p.m., Maximum Blue, Max and Jeff Silverstein.

. 8:30 p.m., Elizabeth Ellis, traditional Irish fiddling.

. 9:30 p.m., In Other Words, jazz, blues, pop and folk.

Performances will be aired on Bangor’s public access channel.

Bangor Public Library

. 6-10 p.m., Costume party and 125th birthday celebration. Dress as your favorite literary character. Prizes awarded.

. 6:30-8:30, RetroRockerz.

. 6:30-9 p.m., dance lessons with members of Robinson Ballet: Get That Body Moving, 6:30-7 p.m.; ’50s Dance Party, 7:30-8 p.m.; Latin Rhythms, 8:30-9 p.m.

. 9:30-10:30 p.m., RetroRockerz.

Also, Northern Star planetarium shows, old-fashioned birthday games, crafts for children, karaoke, surprises, light refreshments, birthday cake.

Hammond Street Congregational Church

. 6-9 p.m., fun and games for children of all ages, families.

. 7-8 p.m., dance lesson for children.

Light refreshments and hot cider.

Hammond Street Senior Center

. 8-11:30 p.m., classic rock ‘n’ roll dance. Pianist Betty Severance will sing and play popular songs from the 1940s and 1950s. Her son, Alan Severance, will sing duets with her.

Bagel “Blues” Central

. 7-11:30 p.m., Ragged Moon. Gail Weatherbee, Mike Curtis, Don Barry and Paul Riechmann. Food and beverage concessions and free light snacks.

Union Street Brick Church

. 7-8:30 p.m., WKIT music and dancing.

. 8:30-11-30 p.m., live music and dancing with Big Time, a progressive funk rock band. Members are Myke Billings, JosuaMooers, Anthony Drouin and Zach Redmann.

Epic Sports 5k finale

. Road race, 10 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 30. $10 before race day, $15 day of race. To register, call 941-5670. Benefits the American Folk Festival.

Lippincott Books

. 10-11 p.m., poets Bruce Pratt and Anne Britting Oleson. Refreshments and hot cider.

The Maine Edge

. Tailgate party on the street. Hot and cold drinks, snacks.

Maine Discovery Museum

. Museum will be open noon-7:30 p.m. with admission free after 3 p.m. Make hats and noisemakers, 4-5:45 p.m.; early New Year’s “count up” for children, 6 p.m., followed by a noisy parade throughout the museum, listening to the Fairmount Park Band. Macaroni and cheese or chili meal available after 4 p.m., $3.50 a person.

Briar Patch

. 6:30-11:30 p.m., family game night. Board games for those age 8 and up.

Bangor Symphony Orchestra

6:30-11:30 p.m., instrument petting zoo. Hot beverages available for sale. Proceeds benefit the orchestra.
