HAMPDEN – Grief counselors, a high school nurse and a guidance counselor from Samuel L. Wagner Middle School will be available Friday to help students and friends deal with the death of 17-year-old Hampden Academy junior Matty Osborne.

Matthew Ryan Osborne, a Winterport teenager, was struck and killed Christmas Eve when he walked onto a southbound lane of Interstate 95 near the Bangor Mall to retrieve a gas grill that had fallen out of the back of the pickup truck he was driving.

Osborne was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, Maine State Police confirmed Monday night.

Counselors will be available during visiting hours from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, which is located at 45 Western Ave., Superintendent Rick Lyons said Wednesday.

The funeral is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Hampden.

Osborne played varsity football for Hampden Academy for three years and basketball for one year. He loved weight lifting, riding around on snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles, golfing, hunting, fishing and his pets. He worked at Shaw’s supermarket on Main Street in Bangor and went to middle school in Winterport.

A teacher of Osborne’s described him as a “happy-go-lucky” teenager, Lyons said.
