ORONO – It was a dominating performance that would have made New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick proud.
The Brewer girls indoor track and field team resembled a Patriots-like juggernaut Thursday night, with MacKenzie DeGraff, Kaitlin Noyes and Katie Snow combining for seven individual victories as the Witches compiled a whopping 265 points at a multi-team Eastern Maine Indoor Track League meet at the University of Maine field house Thursday night.
The Hampden Academy girls finished a distant second with 70 points, while Orono tallied 42 points to finish third, Mount Desert Island took fourth with 29 and Hermon’s 12 rounded out the top five out of seven teams.
The Brewer boys also captured team honors with 146 points to Hampden’s 71. Orono finished third with 58, MDI fourth with 42 and Hermon fifth with 38.
The Broncos were originally slated to compete today, but they were allowed to compete Thursday to attend today’s wake for HA student Matt Osborne, who died in an accident on Christmas Eve. The Broncs honored Osborne’s memory by writing his name on their arms or legs.
In the girls meet, coach Jamerson Crowley got so sound a performance out of his Witches that he’ll be hard-pressed to find an outstanding performer.
“It’s going to be hard to pick the athlete of the meet, that’s for sure,” said Crowley, whose team earned first-place finishes in 12 out of the 14 events.
“We had a lot of great races, great performances,” Crowley added.
Junior DeGraff continued to set high standards in the long jump, triple jump and 60-yard dash, taking all three events while earning personal-bests of 15 feet, 103/4 inches in the long jump and 34-21/2 in the triple jump.
“I was happy, I got pr’s in both of them,” said DeGraff. “I wanted to jump 35 but 34 feels good.”
DeGraff posted a 7.94 in winning the 60, while seniors Kira Giroux and Sarah Risser took second and third, respectively.
Giroux later spearheaded a dominating 200-meters effort, posting a 28.22 while Risser finished second, Noyes third and Erika Cote fourth.
Giroux, Cote and Risser teamed up with Chelsea Gillies on the winning 4×220 relay, which was timed in a speedy 1:55.79 despite a spotty exchange between Gillies and Giroux.
“It was pretty close to being out of the zone, but we made the best of it, we made it work,” Giroux said.
That’s one of many things Giroux feels the Witches need to fine-tune throughout the season.
“Probably running faster splits and getting better handoffs,” said Giroux.
Crowley’s deep distance corps dominated their events, as Snow and Bekah Clark finished 1-2 in the mile and 800 while Michelle Haluska, Ashley Geiser, Whitney Gould and Meghan McCloskey took the first four positions in the 2 mile, while Carolynn Tuck finished second in the long jump in 14-63/4 and third in the high jump at 4-10, a personal best.
Noyes’ first-place finishes came in the 400 (1:04.14) and pole vault (7-6).
Other Brewer winners included Sierra Reed’s 30-81/2 heave in the shot put while the 4×880 team of Whitney Gould, Olivia Gould, McCloskey and Holly Nevers clocked a 12:06.54.
MDI’s Mariah Grover took the high jump with a leap of 5-0 while Hampden’s Siobhan Grogan outleaned Tuck to take the hurdles.
In the boys meet, Crowley was left with a thin roster of 19, with a number of athletes out sick or on vacation.
“We had a great meet on the boys side, we’re missing a lot of guys and did great,” he said. “We had some sickness and vacation stuff that people had worked out with me. We stepped up and had a great, great day.”
Despite the paltry numbers, the Witches showcased solid depth and while getting two individual victories from top sprinter Ben Sinclair in the 400 (52.61) and 200 (24.28).
Brewer dominated the hurdles, with Chris Corey, Chris Brady, Steven Rice and Tristan Worman going 2-3-4-5, and triple jump, as Corey, Brady and Rice finished 2-3-4, with Corey earning a solid mark of 37-91/4.
“We did well with the sprinters, the hurdlers had a pretty good day,” said Crowley. “I think we’re strong in those events. The distance boys had a pretty good day too.
Brewer’s other individual winner besides Sinclair was Dan Hanscom’s 40-41/2 triumph in the shot put while Travis Blackmer took second in the mile and 2-mile.
Hampden’s Matt Toothaker picked up two individual victories, winning the long and triple jumps with leaps of 18-91/2 and 40-41/4.
Orono’s Matt Nadeau pulled away from Blackmer to take the mile in 4:48.78 while Foxcroft Academy’s Graham Pearsall took the 2-mile in 10:55.36.
