COLERAINE, Minn. – Madawaska native Meagan Toussaint and Fort Fairfield’s Hilary McNamee each won a sprint race Friday as the biathlon Youth and Junior World Championship trials opened at Mt. Itasca.
Toussaint and McNamee, who ski for the Caribou-based Maine Winter Sports Center team are among the competitors are vying for spots on the U.S. team that will attend the world championships in Ruhpolding, Germany, next month.
Toussaint won the 7.5-kilometer junior women’s sprint while McNamee took the women’s youth 6K race.
MWSC’s Russell Currier of Stockholm, a four-time team member, was third in the junior men’s 10K sprint. He had four penalties and finished 1 minute, 22 seconds behind first-place finisher Wynn Roberts of Battle Lake, Minn.
Newt Rogers, a Fort Kent native and another MWSC skier, was fourth with five penalties and 2:30 behind.
Toussaint finished with three penalties but had a 24.4-second advantage on Brynden Manbeck of Mount Itasca, who also missed three shots.
McNamee recorded three penalties in the women’s youth race. Addie Byrne of Mount Itasca also had three penalties but was 58.1 seconds behind McNamee. Fort Kent’s Grace Boutot was third with three penalties and was 1:28.4 behind McNamee.
Kaitlyn Bernard and Jessica Caron, who also compete for the Maine Winter Sports Center, were fifth and sixth, respectively. MWSC skier Andrea Mayo was eighth.
MWSC’s Nick Michaud was third in the men’s youth 7.5K race. He missed two shots and was 2:08.7 seconds off the winner, Mt. Itasca’s Leif Nordgren.
The competitions continue Saturday with a pursuit race and Sunday with a relay-format competition and the announcement of the U.S. team.
