ADDISON – State police were trying to find out Sunday night who had crashed a car on Basin Road and then fled.
Police were unsure what kind of injuries the driver of the 1998 Buick LeSabre suffered when the vehicle rolled and came to rest on its roof near where a creek flows under the road toward Wohoa Bay. They used a police dog in an attempt to track the driver but were unable to pick up a trail.
Trooper Mike Southard said the vehicle was headed east on the road when it went out of control shortly after 3:30 p.m. He said witnesses estimated the car was going 100 mph before it veered off the right side of the road, spun back onto the pavement and then rolled off the opposite side of the road.
Emergency response personnel initially heard the car might have gone into the water, but that report was false, Southard said.
“He was zipping right along,” the trooper said.
Southard said the car either was skidding out of control or rolling for a distance of about 800 feet. Police believe the driver was the only person in the car at the time of the accident, he said.
In the demolished car, Southard and other officers found and collected hair samples that they might be able to use to identify the driver. He said it would be premature to say whether alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
The road was closed for more than two hours as police investigated the crash and a tow truck driver righted the vehicle and loaded it onto the back of a flatbed truck.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Department and local fire department and ambulance crews assisted at the scene.
