Youth in Motion

BREWER – Youth in Motion is a program for children and young adults who have a disability and want to get together with others with a disability to play games and sports in a wheelchair. Currently these are all played inside a gym.

Any child or young adult who is a wheelchair user or would like to play in a wheelchair is welcome, as are parents, siblings and friends.

Some of the wheelchair users are paraplegic, quadriplegic or amputee, or have spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy or other problems with their legs.

Youth in Motion meets 6-7:30 p.m. the first Saturday of each month at the Brewer Recreation Center in the armory, 318 Wilson St. Activities are free.

Skate with the Bears

PORTLAND – The University of Maine Black Bears men’s hockey team will journey to the Cumberland County Civic Center 5-6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, for the annual “Skate with the Bears” session.

The free skate-along and autograph session afterward are presented in cooperation with Weight Watchers of Maine. For information, call 581-4103, Ext. 2.

Sports Done Right

ORONO – U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia J. Snowe announced that the omnibus appropriations bill that was approved by Congress includes more than $2.3 million in federal funding for health care and education projects in Maine, including Sports Done Right.

In a joint statement, Snowe and Collins said, “We are pleased that the omnibus appropriations bill includes funding for projects and programs that will help improve the quality of care and education opportunities for Mainers. For example, this bill includes funds, which we requested, that will enable Mainers living in rural communities to utilize technology and innovation to receive better access to quality health care. It provides much-needed dollars to help improve access to education to rural and low-income students throughout our state.”

Snowe and Collins announced that the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriations bill includes $140,000 for the University of Maine’s Sports Done Right. Funding will support the University of Maine’s Sports Done Right initiative, a statewide and emerging national model for defining, shaping, and maintaining healthy interscholastic and youth sports programs.
