Winterport youth earns Eagle Scout standing with church garden project

WINTERPORT – Madison Albert Jr., a member of Boy Scout Troop 234 in Winterport, recently was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout during a Court of Honor held at the Katahdin Area Council’s Camp Roosevelt in Eddington.

He is the 17-year-old son of Madison and Laurie Albert and grandson of Robert Hall of Winthrop, Mass., Mary Havey of Hampton, N.H., and John E. and Rachel Albert of Winn.

Albert is a member of the Hampden Academy Class of 2008. He participates in many school activities, including symphonic, jazz and pep bands, Chamber Singers, Voices Unlimited, Dollars for Scholars, and the Drug and Alcohol Awareness Task Force. He also participates on the academy’s ice hockey and golf teams.

His Eagle Scout project was created at Ellingwood’s Corner United Methodist Church, where he is a member. He planned and organized the creation of a Prayer Meditation Garden.

Materials needed that were not donated were purchased using money raised by selling 110 custom-engraved brick pavers. The pavers were used to outline the garden pathway. A plaque with a Bible verse was mounted on a large boulder in the center of the garden, and a stone base was built to elevate and support the boulder. After the garden of flowers and shrubs was planted, a garden bench was constructed and placed nearby.

Albert plans to attend college after his high school graduation to study music and business.
