BRUNSWICK – The lawyer who led the process of creating a plan for reusing the Brunswick Naval Air Station is stepping down.

Martin Wilk tendered his resignation from the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority on Dec. 26 in a letter to Gov. John Baldacci.

Wilk served first as chairman of the Brunswick Local Redevelopment Authority, which created a master reuse plan to guide the civilian redevelopment of the property. Then he served as chairman of the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority charged with implementing the plan.

Wilk, a lawyer and former town councilor, says the timing was right to step down now, before the MRRA begins its work in earnest. The 3,000-acre base is due to be closed in 2011.
