SANFORD – A weekend snowmobile accident claimed the life of a 23-year-old Kennebunk man.

Authorities said Christopher Jackson was snowmobiling with two friends when the accident happened about 8 p.m. Friday. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Maine Warden Service, Jackson was approaching a gate that separates a trail from its intersection with a road when he tried to avoid the gate by turning the snowmobile hard to the right. The sled rolled over and Jackson came off, hitting his head on a pole and landing in the snow, according to Warden John Lonergan.

Lonergan said Jackson was wearing a helmet, and alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the accident.
