Grant for Operation Breaking Stereotypes

ORONO – Operation Breaking Stereotypes recently received a grant of $5,400 from the Maine Expansion Arts Fund and Equity Fund from the Maine Community Foundation to support the production of “The Laramie Project.”

A joint cast of students from Orono High School and Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy in Bronx, N.Y., will present “The Laramie Project” on March 15 and 16.

The public is invited to attend the performance at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 16, at the Church of Universal Fellowship in Orono.

“This grant allows us to share both the story of Matthew Shepard and continue the on-going cross-cultural partnership between OHS and RKA, which supports students as they delve into issues of hate and prejudice in their local and national communities,” said Camden Carter, co-founder of Operation Breaking Stereotypes and director of “The Laramie Project.”

Operation Breaking Stereotypes, founded in 2002, builds relationships and facilitates exchanges between diverse groups of learners in grades six through 12, lifting barriers and uniting youth in the quest for social justice.

The partnership between Orono High School and Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy is one of five partnerships currently facilitated by Operation Breaking Stereotypes.

A statewide organization with offices in Ellsworth and Portland, the Maine Community Foundation works in partnership with donors and community groups to strengthen Maine. For information, visit www.mainecf.org or call toll-free 877-700-6800.
