A theft of opportunity occurred Wednesday night when the clerk of C&K Variety of Levant apparently left a cash drawer on the counter just before the store closed and a 21-year-old Hudson man apparently couldn’t resist the temptation, Deputy Sean McCue of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department said Thursday.

The suspect, who is known to police but whose name has not been released, was caught on video surveillance tapes taking the money, which included $150 in cash and $164 in checks.

Two others who had entered the store with the suspect but who were in a truck in the parking lot when the theft occurred already have been interviewed and were not charged, McCue said.

Police were looking for the suspect late Thursday.
