Applications available for 2 camps Greenland Point Center sets one weekend for children, one for women

The Greenland Point Center in Princeton is accepting applications for two camps that will be held this winter.

The first is a winter conservation camp for girls and boys age 10-14, which will be held on Feb. 15-17. Students will learn about snowmobile safety and operation, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, skating, trapping and tracking, and canoe slides will be held.

The fee is $200, which covers all programming, equipment and meals. Limited scholarships are available.

On Feb. 22-24, a women’s outdoor adventure weekend will be held.

The program will help novices learn skills and experts sharpen them. The fee is $200, which includes programming, equipment and meals.

DOC fills outdoor recreation post

The Maine Department of Conservation announced this week that it has hired Michael “Mick” Rogers as its supervisor of outdoor recreation at the Bureau of Parks & Lands.

Rogers will guide the expenditure of nearly $1 million per year in federal funds, along with much more in the form of state, local and private money.

The supervisor administers the Recreational Trail Program and the National Park Service’s Land & Water Conservation Fund.

Rogers served for 14 years as park manager at Bradbury Mountain State Park.

Belfast derby on tap

The outing club at Belfast Area High School will sponsor an ice fishing derby on Feb. 2 at Swan Lake.

The derby will run from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. and features plenty of cash and door prizes.
