HODGDON – Two people were killed Friday morning after the car they were riding in veered out of control and slid into the path of a logging truck.
The accident happened just before 10:30 a.m. on U.S. Route 1 in Hodgdon, approximately 1 mile south of Houlton.
According to Maine State Police Sgt. Tom Pelletier, Yvonne Bigelow, 76, of Amity was heading south in her 2006 Subaru when she lost control of the vehicle.
The Subaru skidded across the centerline and collided head-on with a northbound logging truck owned and operated by George Francis of Perth-Andover, New Brunswick.
Pelletier said Francis tried to avoid the collision but was unable to avoid striking the Subaru.
Bigelow and her passenger, 82-year-old Philip Crowley of Amity, died at the scene.
Francis was not injured. His 2005 Western Star had minor damage, while the Subaru had extensive damage.
The road was covered with snow and slush at the time and road conditions are considered to be a factor in the accident.
Those involved were wearing seat belts.
Snow began to fall in the area early Friday morning, and snow, sleet and light freezing rain and drizzle caused problems for motorists and pedestrians throughout the day.
A winter weather advisory remained in effect in Aroostook County until late Friday evening.
Forecasters said a total snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 4 inches was expected before it was slated to change over to freezing rain.
In other parts of The County, police reported minor fender benders in Caribou, and the Caribou Police Department fielded a handful of calls from motorists who had skidded off slick roads Friday afternoon.
By evening, however, it had quieted down, according to Caribou police Sgt. Paul Vincent.
No major accidents were reported in the St. John Valley.
The Presque Isle Police Department had a few minor accidents Friday afternoon and into the early evening, including a tractor-trailer that slid off Conant Road.
In Houlton, some sporting and civic events scheduled for Friday evening were canceled, and police spent the afternoon dealing with reports of cars off the road.
