Historic windjammer undergoing repairs

BOOTHBAY HARBOR – A historic windjammer damaged by vandals is in for repairs.

Boothbay Harbor Shipyard plans to replace the stem and rebuild the bowsprit of the 76-foot J. & E. Riggin. The vessel, built in 1927, has been used as a passenger vessel since 1974 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1991.

Damages to the windjammer amounted to tens of thousands of dollars last month after somebody cut lines to the vessel, causing it to float free and crash into a dock in Rockland. Police say two juveniles were responsible.

A 15-year-old boy from Rockland and a 13-year-old boy from Thomaston face charges of aggravated criminal mischief.
