Downeast Senior College president Fran Trefts of Hancock invites all area seniors to attend the sandwich seminars, four fulfilling events, which will be offered by DSC each Monday in February.

Each seminar begins at noon, and will be held Monday, Feb. 4, Feb. 11, Feb. 18 and Feb. 25, in Ellsworth City Hall, which is handicapped accessible by an elevator located “at the right of the front entrance” of City Hall, Trefts wrote.

Attendees are encouraged to “bring a sandwich … if you wish,” and beverages will be available.

“These seminars are open to the public,” Trefts wrote, so “please come to learn and enjoy.”

The first speaker, on Feb. 4, will be Dr. Barbara Reeve, who practices psychiatry in Ellsworth, and has just resigned “after serving a “number of years” as a member of the Ellsworth City Council, Trefts wrote. Before opening her practice in Ellsworth, Dr. Reeve was “the medical director of Acadia Hospital in Bangor,” Trefts added.

The “proper way to dispose of pharmaceutical drugs” will be explained to the attendees by Dr. Steven Gressitt of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services at the Sandwich Seminar on Feb. 11.

On Feb. 18, Sen. Dennis Damon of Trenton, representing District 28 and who is serving his sixth year in the legislature, will discuss issues relating to the Maine Senate and Legislature. Damon is chairman of the Transportation Committee, Trefts wrote.

The final Sandwich Seminar speaker is University of Maine instructor Cathy Lewis. A former elementary school teacher, Lewis was principal of Pendleton Street School in Brewer and a former principal of the Ella Lewis School in Steuben.

“Following each talk,” Trefts added, “there will be time for answers to some of your questions.”

Eastern Maine Community College director of public relations, Elizabeth Clayton, has announced that the third show of the EMCC 2007-2008 Art Exhibit Series features the work of Kristborg T. Whitney.

Whitney’s work will be on exhibit beginning Wednesday, Jan. 16, running through Thursday, Feb. 29, in the EMCC Library Gallery on the Bangor campus.

A reception for, and presentation by, the artist is planned for 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at the Library Gallery. The public is invited to attend.

Clayton wrote that Whitney describes her work as “landscapes of angles and relationships, and light. Always light.”

The artist is a native of Iceland and graduate of Reykjavik School of Arts and Crafts with a focus on fiber arts and textile design.

She moved to Maine and became a full-time studio artist in 1996, and has had her work featured in galleries through the U.S. and Iceland.

For more information, and the EMCC Library Gallery hours of operation, call 974-4640.

Tickets are $30 each and a limited number of tables for 10, at $300, are available.

The fundraiser includes a cash bar, and light refreshments by Montes International Catering.

Nominations are now being accepted for the WLBZ 2 and WCSH 6 10th annual Teens Who Care Awards, reports community relations director Charlene Belanger.

The nomination deadline is Friday, Feb. 15.

Teens may be nominated by any adult in his or her community, but not by their parents or legal guardian, Belanger said.

Six winners will be honored during an awards ceremony in April at the Portland Museum of Art.

The winners will also be featured in a short video, which will later be televised, and presented a $2,000 scholarship from Maine Education Services, sponsor of Teens Who Care.

According to the stations’ Web site, Teens Who Care honors “teens who caringly volunteer their time and talents in the service of others. In leadership roles, and in more quiet ways, teens all over the state are living lives that make a difference.”

For more information, visit WLBZ2.com or WCSH6.com, go to Community and click on Teens Who Care, or call 800-464-1213.
