CARIBOU – Police in Caribou were searching Monday afternoon for a car believed to be stolen from the parking lot of the Sleepers Store earlier in the day.

Officer Keith Ouellette of the Caribou Police Department said a female left the four-door 1998 gold Ford Taurus running with the keys inside while she went into the Lyndon Street store to help two people pick up some items.

When she returned outside just before 11:30 a.m., the car was gone, he said.

Caribou police sent out a notice to other police departments throughout the state asking them to be on the lookout for the vehicle.

The vehicle had not been recovered as of Monday afternoon, according to Caribou police Officer Craig Peterson.

“We don’t have a whole lot of leads right now,” he said. “We are continuing to look into it. It appears right now that it was just a random act.”
