STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The University of Maine women’s basketball team was unable to hold on to a second-half lead after battling back in the first half as Stony Brook beat the Black Bears 72-65 Wednesday night in an America East conference clash at Stony Brook Arena.

Aly Young scored a game-high 25 points to go with five rebounds for Stony Brook (6-10, 1-2).

Tewksbury hit a layup with 17:35 left in the game to give Maine its only lead at 35-34, but Stony Brook answered when Dana Ferraro (17 points, 11 rebounds) stole the ball and passed to Kirsten Jeter (13 points), who put down a fast-break layup.

Stony Brook pushed the lead back to six points, although Maine’s Brittany Boser converted a conventional 3-point play with 9:59 remaining to cut it to 48-45.

The Bears couldn’t get within four points the rest of the game.

Maine was down 22-8 with 12:08 remaining in the first half but climbed back into it, outscoring the Seawolves 23-12 the rest of the period.
