STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The University of Maine women’s basketball team was unable to hold on to a second-half lead after battling back in the first half as Stony Brook beat the Black Bears 72-65 Wednesday night in an America East conference clash at Stony Brook Arena.

Amanda Tewksbury led Maine (4-12 overall, 1-2 in America East) with 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists. She scored 12 in the first half while the Black Bears rallied from a 14-point deficit.

Aly Young scored a game-high 25 points to go with five rebounds for Stony Brook (6-10, 1-2).

Tewksbury hit a layup with 17:35 left in the game to give Maine its only lead at 35-34, but Stony Brook answered when Dana Ferraro (17 points, 11 rebounds) stole the ball and passed to Kirsten Jeter (13 points), who put down a fast-break layup.

Stony Brook pushed the lead back to six points, although Maine’s Brittany Boser converted a conventional 3-point play with 9:59 remaining to cut it to 48-45.

The Bears couldn’t get within four points the rest of the game.

Maine was down 22-8 with 12:08 remaining in the first half but climbed back into it, outscoring the Seawolves 23-12 the rest of the period.

She knocked down a jumper with no time left to make it 34-31 on a play after Christina Mosher of Farmington pulled down the offensive rebound of a missed Kris Younan free-throw attempt.

Boser added 11 points and two blocks, while Tanna Ross of Newburgh chipped in with 11 points and four rebounds in 19 minutes. Emily Rousseau of Biddeford had five assists.

Maine shot 52.4 percent (11-for-21) in the first half and Stony Brook, which was shooting better than 60 percent midway through the first, finished at 48.1 percent before halftime.

Rebounding was even at 40 apiece, but Maine had 20 turnovers to Stony Brook’s 15. The Seawolves scored 26 points off of turnovers.
